We can’t change what is real if it is being hidden

When our brain is repeatedly exposed to certain messages, they eventually become familiar and feel “normal.” Through my journey, I’ve come to realize that what is often considered “normal” can also be dysfunctional and harmful. For example, the typical responses of systems to women experiencing violence are often ineffective and harmful. Likewise, the common reactions to workplace violence are not only dysfunctional but also contribute to further harm for women. The messages I received, both directly and through inaction (which is also a form of action), took years for me to unlearn.

I had to unlearn the idea that silence is a solution to improving working conditions for social workers and other helping professionals. I also had to recognize that sharing my story can be a powerful tool for change. Alienation and isolation are deliberate tactics designed to create an unawareness of what’s truly happening.

I’ve learned that accepting violence is not part of my role. While it’s impossible to eliminate all harmful and traumatic events in the helping professions, meaningful and effective interventions are always within our reach. Resource shortages and staffing issues in these fields are deeply connected to this type of dysfunction. Safe and productive workplaces begin when people are not penalized for speaking their truth.
